INNOSOL POWER

Project ID

Full name

INNOvative SOLar micro-thermal energy storage with high-POWER density

Call:

HORIZON 2020

Funding period:

01/2021-12/2024

The project aims to develop and demonstrate an innovative, compact thermal energy storage (μTES) system for small-scale concentrated solar power (CSP) applications. Designed for low-cost, low-temperature operation (<160°C), the system uses high-energy density materials and environmentally friendly refrigerants (e.g., R1233zd(E), R245fa) to deliver over 100 kWh of storage with high roundtrip efficiency and fast thermal response. Key innovations include an integrated heat pump, optimized heat exchanger architecture, and novel compressor design, enabling up to 6 hours of thermal output beyond sunset. Starting at TRL 4, the technology will be validated in a relevant environment and advanced to TRL 6+, with a focus on cost-effectiveness (LCOE analysis) and market readiness for off-grid and small-scale energy users.
